Experience Mount Kilimanjaro on a short but rewarding overnight adventure exploring the beautiful Shira Plateau. This two-day trek offers an introduction to the mountain’s high-altitude landscapes without committing to the full summit climb.

The journey begins with a scenic drive through the western side of Kilimanjaro National Park before reaching the trailhead on the Shira Plateau. From here, the hike takes you across open alpine terrain with wide views of the surrounding valleys and the impressive slopes of Kibo Peak.

Camping overnight on the mountain allows you to experience the peaceful atmosphere of Kilimanjaro after the day visitors have departed. The following day continues across the plateau before descending and returning to Moshi.

This trek is ideal for travelers who would like a short but immersive Kilimanjaro experience, combining mountain scenery, adventure, and time at high altitude.

Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Shira Plateau – Forest Camp

After breakfast, depart from Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate for park registration. Continue with a scenic drive through the forest to the Shira trailhead.

Begin trekking across the Shira Plateau, a high volcanic plateau with open alpine landscapes and spectacular views of Kibo Peak. The hike continues toward Forest Camp, where dinner and overnight camping are arranged.

Distance: approximately 6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Day 2: Forest Camp – Shira Plateau – Return to Moshi

After breakfast, continue trekking across the Shira Plateau while enjoying wide mountain views and the dramatic scenery of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes.

Following the morning hike, descend and transfer back to Moshi, arriving in the late afternoon.

Distance: approximately 10–12 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
